Teeth Whitening Techniques

At Home DIY Teeth Whitening

When people think about teeth whitening they will likely think of these at-home do-it-yourself whitening kits. These kits commonly come in the form of clear, whitening gel covered strips that adhere to the front surface the teeth. Other whitening kits come in the form of clear plastic trays in which whitening gel is inserted into. These trays are then placed over the teeth. The whitening trays can be purchased at the store or prescribed by the dentist. The ones prescribed by the dentist will be custom-fitted to each patient’s teeth. The gel will also have more potent, dentist formulated teeth bleaching material. Both whitening systems require the user to spend time “soaking” the teeth in the whitening gel. Here are the pros and cons of these teeth whitening methods:

  • Inexpensive
  • Easily accessible
  • Can be done in the privacy of one’s home

Cochlear Implant

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that performs the inner ear’s function. It provides a sense of sound to the person who is profoundly deaf or who has a serious hearing problem. The implant consists of two parts: the external part that sits behind the ear and the internal part that is surgically implanted under the skin. Hearing aids work by making the sounds louder, while the implants replace the function of the inner ear’s damaged part to send sound signals to the brain. The implant device consists of different parts including, a microphone, speech processor, transmitter and an electrode array.

Unlike the hearing aids that amplify sounds so the damaged ears can detect them, the cochlear implant works differently. They directly stimulate the auditory nerve and send the signals to the brain, which recognises the signals as sound. Basically, the implant will do the work of the … Read the rest

Becoming Bionic

I know this because when I first broke this knee 60 years ago, physical therapy had not yet come to Virginia, Minnesota. I actually broke my knee chasing boys. I was 16 at the time and had a serious crush on a boy in my class. My girlfriend and I were rushing to get to the front door of the school the same time as the boy and his friends so we could “accidentally bump into them “. However, it was winter time in Northern Minnesota which meant we were running down the school hall with our boots unzipped, our heavy coats unbuttoned and scarves trailing behind us. Halfway to the front door, I tripped over the scarf and fell directly on my left knee on the school’s indestructible cement floor.

A doctor’s visit and a three-day hospital stay followed, along with a cast from the top of my thigh … Read the rest

Baby Teeth Care Is Important

Baby teeth, also called primary teeth, begin to grow in around three months of age. By the age of two years old, a child would have all their baby teeth. It is at this time that pediatric dentists recommend parents bring in their child for his or her first dental checkup and tooth cleaning. Primary teeth begin to fall out around the age of six years. The last of the baby teeth fall out around the age of 12. From the age of two years and 12 years old, parents and subsequently their kids, have the assumption of baby teeth being unimportant. This kind of thinking has led to the thinking that baby teeth aren’t important because they will fall out anyways. What is the purpose of caring for them?

This false thinking has helped contribute to the prevalence of pediatric tooth decay. When children are fed food with sugar, … Read the rest

Benefits of Dry Needling

Dry needling is a procedure where fine filament needles are inserted in a person’s trigger points. These trigger points are located in different muscles all over the body and react to a specific body point. These muscles release muscle tension when triggered by a needle, helping to treat the pain a person is feeling. Relaxation of muscles is also induced by putting pressure on specific pressure points.

The Basic Difference between Dry Needling and Acupuncture

Dry needling and acupuncture are quite different practices, although same types of needles are used in both practices. Traditional Chinese theories are followed in acupuncture in which needles are inserted into the body’s energy channels. When stimulated, these channels will improve or affect the energy flow of a person.

On the other hand, scientific research, western medicinal practices and pathophysiology are followed in this process. Needles are inserted in the muscle and ligament trigger points … Read the rest

Hearing Aids Can Help

Small enough to fit inside or behind the ear, these electronic devices make some sounds louder, allowing users to hear better in most environments. Aids do not actually improve auditory performance, but merely amplify sound. Most consist of a microphone, an amplifier, and a receiver that delivers augmented sounds into the ear. Batteries are typically needed to power the device’s electronics.

As we mentioned, about one in five people have some degree of auditory impairment, but not all of them can benefit from an aid. Those with conductive hearing loss, for example, have structural issues that can only be corrected with surgery or medical treatment. Hearing aids are most effective for folks who have suffered some damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve. Known as sensorineural loss, it is commonly caused by aging, noise damage, or disease. The only bright spot is that the problem does not usually rob … Read the rest

Disadvantages of Being Overweight

  • Coronary problems: The heart is designed to pump blood in the entire body. But, as you gain weight, the excessive fat ends up being deposited in your arteries. Over a period of time, these deposits tend to harden and therefore interrupt the regular supply of blood in the arteries. As a result of this, your heart has to work overtime making it prone to several coronary disorders.
  • Diabetes: Being obese also affects the ability of the body to use the insulin properly. In simple terms, overweight people are more likely to have higher glucose levels in the body. This makes them diabetics. With progress of time, diabetes also affects the other organs of the body worsening the condition of the patient.
  • Infertility: For women, the tendency to become obese also affects their fertility. After all, excessive body weight tends to disturb the hormonal balance as well as the menstrual cycle.

Pediatric Tooth Decay

While the most severe cases of decay have noticeable symptoms, the beginnings can be happening inside your child’s mouth without you even noticing.

Preventing cavities and halting the progression of cavities before they get too out of hand is key to helping your child have a healthy, great-looking mouth and smile. Here are some symptoms of pediatric cavities to be on the lookout for:

The tooth can develop a light brown or even a black appearance. Tooth discoloration is often the most readily noticeable symptom of tooth decay. When children get cavities, the affected teeth can have white spots, as well as brown and black. This tooth discoloration is caused from the breakdown of the tooth enamel. The dentin, which is the layer underneath the enamel gives the teeth its white color.. When the enamel gets weak, bacteria, plaque and germs can infiltrate the white dentin layer, destroying it can … Read the rest

Early Intervention

Early intervention, a program supported by federal legislation, supports infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities. An infant or toddler’s eligibility for early intervention is determined through evaluation and assessment, with contributions from both the child’s family and a licensed early intervention clinic. Once a child is deemed eligible for early intervention, their family is given an Individualized Family Service Plan, which helps guide the family through resources available to them and their child. Among these are physical development therapy programs designed to help infants and toddlers properly develop.

Developmental Therapy

Some of the key components of early intervention are its developmental therapy programs designed for toddlers and infants. These programs include:

  • Physical Development
  • Cognitive Development
  • Adaptive Development
  • Communication Development
  • Social and Emotional Development

These developmental programs center on age-appropriate activities designed to help young children properly function, grow, and mature.
